Vintage Red Lacquer Hira Kanzashi – Genji-guruma & Botan Peony
A beautiful vintage Japanese hira-kanzashi (平簪) hair ornament, crafted from lacquered wood in a rich vermilion-red finish.
The round decorative face features an elaborate traditional design of botan (peony) flowers together with a Genji-guruma (源氏車) — the stylised ox-cart wheel motif associated with classical Japanese design and The Tale of Genji. Gold predominates in the decoration, accented with deep burgundy, green, black and white against the red lacquer.
The reverse is much simpler, decorated with a restrained green leaf motif — a lovely contrast to the elaborate front.
Its long, slender single prong measures approximately 21 cm (8.3″) overall, while the circular ornament is approximately 4 cm (1.6″) across. Despite its substantial length, it weighs only 15 g.
A particularly attractive vintage kanzashi with a very traditional combination of Japanese motifs.
