Japanese Akane Wood Tail Comb with Handmade Case – Kintakedo Gion Kyoto
A beautifully made traditional Japanese Akane wood comb, handmade in Japan and supplied by Kintakedo, the famous multi-generation kanzashi and traditional hair ornament shop in Kyoto’s Gion district.
This fine-toothed comb has a long, slender pointed handle, making it particularly useful for sectioning and arranging the hair. The smooth wooden teeth are gentle on the hair and scalp.
The comb is thoroughly saturated with Japanese Tsubaki (camellia) oil, a traditional treatment that conditions and protects the wood while helping the comb pass smoothly through the hair.
For many years, combs of this type were commonly made from Tsuge (Japanese boxwood). As high-quality tsuge has become increasingly scarce and expensive, these are now made from Akane wood (あかね), carefully finished and oil-treated for use as a traditional Japanese hair comb.
Each comb comes with a handmade Japanese fabric case. The fabrics are produced in a variety of traditional colours and patterns, so the case you receive will be selected at random and may differ from the one shown in the photographs. This makes each piece slightly individual.
