Item Description:

A striking Kyoto-made cotton noren featuring the Japanese numeral for “one,” expressed as a single natural-white brushstroke across a deep charcoal-black ground. Its minimalist design symbolises unity, origin and completion.

This dramatic Japanese noren is named Hitotsu, meaning “one.” Its bold central brushstroke represents the Japanese numeral , rendered in natural white against a deep charcoal-black background.

Although one is the smallest counting number, it also represents something whole, unified and indivisible. It can signify the beginning or point of origin while simultaneously expressing completeness and the idea of everything brought together. This powerful symbolism is distilled into a remarkably simple composition.

The broad, irregular stroke has the energy of spontaneous Japanese calligraphy, with softly feathered edges and scattered drops retaining the character of a brush moving across the surface. The restrained palette gives the design a strong architectural quality.

Made in Kyoto from 100% cotton, the fabric’s subtle weave and gentle translucence allow filtered light to reveal its natural texture. Display it in a doorway, use it as a room divider or hang it as a bold piece of textile artwork in a traditional, contemporary or minimalist interior.

The hanging rod shown in the photograph is not included.
