A graceful Kyoto-made linen textile inspired by the refined naturalism of the Edo Rinpa school. Cascading cherry blossoms are individually painted by hand and offered in your choice of a full-width noren doorway curtain or a slender wall tapestry.

This elegant Japanese textile depicts Shidare-zakura, or weeping cherry blossoms, in the refined decorative style of the Edo Rinpa school.

During the later Edo period, Rinpa artists developed a more naturalistic and highly polished approach while retaining the school’s celebrated sense of rhythm, colour and decorative composition. Its flexible style could embrace a remarkable variety of subjects while creating a distinctly Japanese artistic world.

Manyōsha translates the beauty of an Edo Rinpa composition into naturally textured linen. A weathered cherry tree extends across the warm flax-coloured ground, its slender branches descending beneath clusters of delicate white and pale pink blossoms.

Each textile is individually painted by a Kyoto artisan. Subtle variations in the colour, brushwork and shading reveal the maker’s skill and give every piece an individual character that cannot be reproduced by mechanical printing.

The design is available in two formats:

Noren Doorway Curtain

The full-width two-panel noren allows the spreading branches and cascading blossoms to unfold across a broad composition. It may be displayed in a doorway, used as a room divider or hung as a large piece of Japanese textile artwork.

Wall Tapestry

The narrower tapestry concentrates the design around the beautifully curved trunk and descending blossoms. Its slender proportions make it particularly suitable for an alcove, entranceway, hallway or limited wall space.

Both versions are made from 100% linen. The visible weave and gentle translucence of the fabric soften the painted colours and allow filtered light to become part of the design.

Made in Kyoto by Manyōsha.

The hanging rods shown in the photographs are not included.
