About Kungyokudo 薫玉堂
Kungyokudo traces its history to 1594, when it was established in front of Kyoto’s Nishi Hongwanji Temple. Remarkably, the company continues to operate at the same location more than four centuries later.
For generations, Kungyokudo has produced incense for Buddhist temples and head temples throughout Japan. Drawing on more than 430 years of Kyoto incense-making tradition, its fragrances are known for their gentle, sophisticated character and their use of traditional Japanese aromatic ingredients.
More than simply a home fragrance, Kungyokudo incense represents a living part of Kyoto culture — made in the ancient capital by a house that has been creating fragrance there since the 16th century.
