The Fragrance of a Japanese Hinoki Bath
Hinoki cypress has been prized in Japan for centuries for its beautiful wood and distinctive, clean natural fragrance. It is particularly associated with traditional Japanese baths and onsen-style bathing, where the scent of warm hinoki is an important part of the experience.
Simply place the wooden balls in your bath approximately 20–30 minutes before bathing. As the hinoki becomes wet and warm, its characteristic woody fragrance is released into the bath.
The maker recommends approximately half of the nine-piece bag for each bath, although the amount can easily be adjusted according to your preference.
Genuine Kiso Hinoki
These bath balls are made from Kiso Hinoki, grown in the mountainous Kiso region of Nagano Prefecture—an area particularly famous for its high-quality hinoki cypress.
They are also an environmentally thoughtful product, made using offcuts from timber produced for construction, allowing this beautiful and aromatic wood to be put to further use rather than discarded.
Because these are pieces of genuine natural wood, each ball has its own individual grain, colour and character. Small knots, variations and natural markings are normal and part of their appeal.
Reusable
After bathing, simply remove the balls from the bath and allow them to air-dry naturally in the shade. They can then be used repeatedly.
The maker notes that a small amount of natural resin may occasionally appear on the wood. This resin contributes to the characteristic hinoki fragrance and is completely natural.
When not being used in the bath, the hinoki balls can also be placed in drawers, closets or other small spaces to enjoy their natural woody aroma.
