Ume — Plum Blossom
This dramatic Japanese noren depicts a flowering plum branch against a rich crimson-red ground.
The strong black branch rises across the two panels, carrying delicate golden-yellow blossoms. Its asymmetrical composition and generous open space give the design the expressive quality of a traditional Japanese ink painting.
The plum blossom, or ume, flowers during the coldest months of the year. It is therefore cherished in Japan as a symbol of perseverance, renewal and the approaching spring.
This noren is distinguished by its use of urushi, traditional Japanese lacquer. Processed lacquer is applied over the solid-dyed linen, adding depth and a subtle sheen to the surface. The resulting finish recalls the brilliance of fine Japanese lacquerware while retaining the natural texture and translucency of linen.
Urushi has been used in Japan since the Jōmon period and remains one of the country’s most celebrated traditional crafts. Historically, the English word “japan” was even used to describe lacquerware and lacquer-style finishes.
Backlighting enhances the luminous red fabric and brings the plum branch vividly to life. The noren can be displayed as a doorway curtain, room divider or decorative textile artwork.
