Description:

Three Essential items for doing Japanese traditional hair styles:

1) Ketabo are an essential element of many traditional Japanese ‘Nihongami’ hairstyles including those worn by the Maiko and Geiko of Kyoto. They are used to add volume to sections of the hair including the famous ‘Momoware’ bun of the Maiko.  This is exactly the same item used by Professional Nihongami hairstylists. It can also be used to clean the hair or wig by placing a small peice on a wooden, two-sided ‘Sukigushi’ comb and coming the hair to remove oil or dust. It measures about 3½” or 9cm square (rolled in the box).

2) Mottoi or ‘Motoyui’ are an essential element of all traditional Japanese ‘Nihongami’ hairstyles including those worn by the Maiko and Geiko of Kyoto. They are used to tie-off sections of the hair and to keep the components of the hairstyle in place. This is a set of all three colors commonly used in a Maiko hairstyle and includes 20 each of: Red, White and Black – a total of 60 pcs. 28″ or 71 cm long. This is exactly the same item used by Professional Nihongami hairstylists.

3) Kansai Tokoyama Bintsuke is the wax is used in virtually all traditional Japanese ‘Nihongami’ hair styles to straighten and shape the hair or wig. This is the exact item used by professional ’Nihongami’ hairdressers when styling the Maiko and Geiko’s hair and wigs. They actually come in 16 degrees of hardness with #1 being the softest and #16 the hardest. However as many of them are for specialized perposes and are not always available, we are only offering #9 in this listing. One pack is 37 grams. The most useful for general purposes is #9 as it can easily be melted for use – if you would like another hardness, just let us know with a note on your payment. To use it, just soften it between the hands and apply to either the comb or directly onto the section of the hair being styled. The hair is then normally tied with Mottoi.
