Susuki — Japanese Silver Grass
This atmospheric linen noren captures a field of slender susuki grasses moving gently in the autumn breeze.
Hundreds of fine, overlapping lines spread across the natural linen, gradually forming an expansive landscape. Soft shades of charcoal, brown and muted burgundy create depth without overwhelming the restrained composition. Carefully considered areas of open space allow the fabric and light to become part of the design.
The image is created using nassen, a textile dye-printing technique that allows colour to penetrate the fibres while preserving the linen’s natural texture and translucency. Subtle lustrous accents catch the changing light, helping individual grasses emerge from the layered field.
Susuki, also known as Japanese silver grass or Japanese pampas grass, is one of Japan’s traditional Seven Grasses of Autumn. It has long been associated with the arrival of autumn, moon-viewing and the quiet beauty of the changing seasons.
Displayed in a doorway or as a decorative wall textile, this noren brings the peaceful feeling of an autumn field into either a traditional or contemporary interior.
