A playful Kyoto-made linen noren inspired by the celebrated Chōjū-giga animal scrolls. Frogs, rabbits and a monkey leap, tumble and relax among the Seven Herbs of Spring in a lively scene named Utage, meaning “feast” or “merry gathering.”
This charming Japanese noren is named Utage, meaning “feast” or “merry gathering,” and draws inspiration from the wonderfully animated world of Chōjū-giga.
Frogs, rabbits and a monkey frolic among the Seven Herbs of Spring. Some leap energetically through the air, others tumble or recline, while one mischievous rabbit appears to carry an enormous sake cup. Each character contributes to the cheerful commotion of the gathering.
The design captures the humour and expressive movement for which Chōjū-giga is loved. Although inspired by Japan’s historic animal scrolls, the animals are arranged in an original scene created especially for this noren.
Fine dark linework is set against natural flax-coloured linen, allowing the individual figures and delicate plants to emerge with remarkable clarity. The open weave and gentle translucence of the fabric allow filtered daylight to become part of the composition.
Finished with deep indigo borders at the top and bottom, the restrained natural palette makes this playful design easy to display in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Made in Kyoto by Manyōsha, this two-panel noren may be used in a doorway, as a room divider or as a large piece of Japanese textile artwork.
