A beautiful unworn pair of vintage Tengu Shinsaibashi (天狗 心斎橋) women’s zōri, made in Osaka by one of Japan’s most respected traditional footwear makers.
The rich glossy red body is paired with elegant floral-patterned hanao straps in warm gold, orange and brown tones. The uppers and soles are leather, with the quality of materials and workmanship characteristic of high-grade Japanese footwear of the period.
These zōri have been stored for many years but remain in exceptional, never-worn condition. Even more unusually, they retain their original Tengu box and packaging, including the original packet of spare heel parts.
About Tengu Shinsaibashi
Founded in 1894 (Meiji 27) in Osaka’s Shinsaibashi district, Tengu was one of Japan’s distinguished specialist footwear makers, producing finely made zōri and geta for generations.
For more than a century, the company represented a style of Japanese shoemaking in which materials, finish and craftsmanship mattered enormously. Like many traditional domestic manufacturers, however, Tengu eventually struggled against lower-cost overseas production. The company closed in 2011 after 117 years in business.
That history makes surviving unworn examples particularly appealing today — especially a pair such as these with their original packaging still intact.
