Vintage Japanese Kinchaku Bag – Black Floral Chirimen & Takekago Bamboo Basket

A beautiful vintage Japanese kinchaku bag combining soft rayon chirimen fabric with a traditional woven takekago bamboo basket base.

The black chirimen fabric features a colourful Japanese floral design with delicate white detailing, dramatically accented by bright red drawstrings. The cords draw the top closed and also serve as handles for carrying.

The smoked bamboo basket base gives the bag structure and wonderful texture, while the interior is lined in pale yellow cotton.

Kinchaku have traditionally been carried with kimono and yukata, but their compact size and simple drawstring construction make them equally appealing as distinctive contemporary handbags. This is a particularly attractive example of traditional Japanese materials and design adapted for everyday use.
