Description
An exceptional vintage Givenchy brooch from 1977, designed in the style of a ceremonial military medal or decoration.
This striking piece features a large octagonal medallion with glossy black lacquer inlays, a prominent oval coral-red cabochon, and rich, heavy gold plating. The medallion is suspended from a horizontal black lacquered bar by substantial articulated gold-plated links, allowing it to hang naturally when worn.
The bold geometric design, dramatic contrast of black, red and gold, and substantial 29-gram weight are wonderfully characteristic of the statement jewelry of the late 1970s.
Two Ways to Wear
Although designed as a brooch, this piece can also be worn as a pendant by threading a suitable cord through the upper suspension, as illustrated in the photographs.
This offers an attractive alternative for those who prefer not to put a pin through delicate fabrics or valuable clothing. The cord shown in the photographs is for illustration only and is not included.
Hallmark
The reverse bears the original oval Givenchy hallmark, inscribed:
© GIVENCHY
PARIS–NEW YORK
1977
The dated hallmark is a particularly desirable feature for collectors of vintage Givenchy designer jewelry.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition, with beautifully preserved black lacquer, brilliant gold plating, and a glossy red cabochon. The pin and articulated suspension are intact.
A distinctive and highly wearable example of 1970s Givenchy costume jewelry, combining the elegance of a formal decoration with the bold, architectural styling of the period.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
