A charming Japanese body towel from Kumagawa-juku, the historic post town on the famous Saba Kaido (Mackerel Road) connecting the Wakasa region with Kyoto.

Made in Japan from 100% cotton, this towel has a special textured scrub-type weave designed for washing and gently exfoliating the body. Its long, narrow shape makes it particularly convenient for washing the back.

The delightful design depicts Kumagawa-juku and two travelers carrying an enormous blue mackerel — a playful reference to the fish for which the historic Saba Kaido became famous.

Kumagawa-juku prospered for centuries as an important stopping and trading point on the route between Wakasa and Kyoto, and much of its traditional Edo-period streetscape survives today.

A practical Japanese bath item as well as an unusual regional souvenir.
