Description
A striking traditional Japanese Tsunodaru (角樽) sake serving set, made for festive and ceremonial occasions such as New Year celebrations, weddings and family gatherings.
The distinctive tsunodaru — literally a “horned sake barrel” — is finished in deep red and black lacquer-style colors, with the character 和 (Wa) in gold. Wa conveys ideas of harmony and Japanese tradition, making it particularly appropriate for a celebratory serving vessel.
The set includes three broad, shallow ceremonial sake cups, graduated in size and decorated with the traditional Shōchikubai (松竹梅) combination:
Shō (松) – Pine
Chiku (竹) – Bamboo
Bai (梅) – Plum Blossom
Together, pine, bamboo and plum are an auspicious Japanese motif associated with longevity, resilience and renewal, and are especially appropriate for New Year and other celebratory occasions.
The three cups nest neatly together and can be stored on top of the tsunodaru as shown in the photographs.
How it is used
The tsunodaru is filled with sake, traditionally served at room temperature. The accompanying bamboo hishaku (柄杓) ladle is used to dip into the vessel and pour sake into an individual cup for each guest.
The three differently sized cups allow the serving piece to be adapted to different guests and occasions while creating the wonderfully formal presentation associated with traditional Japanese celebratory drinking.
Although fully functional, this is also a beautiful Japanese display piece — particularly attractive for a New Year table, sake collection, restaurant, Japanese interior or special occasion.
