Product Description
A refined Kyoto-made scroll tapestry depicting two red-crowned cranes in expressive sumi-style brushwork. Traditionally associated with longevity, prosperity and good fortune, the cranes bring a quiet, auspicious presence to the home.
This elegant Japanese scroll tapestry, named Tsuru, depicts a pair of red-crowned cranes standing together against the naturally textured surface of the fabric.
The larger crane stretches its slender neck towards the sky, as though listening to the breath of the heavens, while its companion rests quietly beside it. Spare, expressive lines and restrained touches of red capture the cranes’ dignified beauty without overwhelming the composition.
In Japan, cranes have been cherished since ancient times as auspicious symbols of longevity, prosperity and enduring happiness. Their graceful presence is believed to introduce a subtle sense of good fortune into everyday life.
The tapestry is made from a textured blend of 90% linen and 10% cotton with a paper backing, giving the slender hanging a gently structured finish. The natural flax-coloured ground complements the soft sumi-grey brushwork and distinctive red crowns.
Made in Kyoto by Manyōsha, this tapestry is finished in the traditional scroll style with ceramic finials. Its narrow proportions make it ideal for an alcove, entranceway or smaller wall space in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
