Product Description
A serene Kyoto-made scroll tapestry depicting a softly glowing full moon emerging from layers of expressive sumi-ink clouds. The generous use of open space creates a quiet, contemplative composition symbolising abundance, comfort and tranquillity.
This atmospheric Japanese scroll tapestry, named Mangetsu, meaning “full moon,” captures the quiet beauty created by the interplay of sumi ink and open space.
A softly glowing golden moon emerges from clouds painted in varying shades of ink. Dark, concentrated brushwork gradually dissolves into delicate grey washes, allowing the natural flax-coloured fabric to become an essential part of the composition.
The moon has long been cherished in Japan as a presence associated with abundance. Here, its gentle light seems to spread through the surrounding clouds, quietly comforting the viewer and bringing a sense of calm to the room.
Although simple and unadorned, the design carries a deeply expressive quality. Its balance of light, shadow and empty space introduces a clear, peaceful atmosphere and a gentle visual flow wherever it is displayed.
The tapestry is made from a textured blend of 90% linen and 10% cotton with a paper backing, giving the slender hanging a softly structured finish. The natural weave remains visible beneath the ink-like design, contributing warmth and organic character.
Made in Kyoto by Manyōsha, the tapestry is finished in the traditional scroll style with ceramic finials. Its narrow proportions make it particularly suitable for a Japanese alcove, entranceway, hallway or smaller wall space in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
