Item Description

A striking crimson linen noren depicting Kake-Hōrai, an auspicious decoration representing a dragon ascending the legendary Mount Hōrai. Traditionally wax-resist dyed in Kyoto, this symbolic design carries wishes for longevity, prosperity, good health and protection from misfortune.

Kake-Hōrai — The Dragon Ascending Mount Hōrai

Set against a vivid crimson ground, this Japanese noren depicts Kake-Hōrai (掛蓬莱), a traditional hanging decoration associated with New Year celebrations and auspicious wishes.

The sweeping green foliage and long golden cords represent a dragon ascending Mount Hōrai—the legendary home of immortals in East Asian tradition. The motif embodies hopes for longevity, prosperity, good health and protection from illness and misfortune.

Traditionally, Kake-Hōrai decorations incorporate hikage-no-kazura, an evergreen clubmoss associated with ancient Japanese ritual. Its enduring greenery is considered an expression of vitality and long life. This design draws upon prayers and decorative traditions reaching back to the Heian period.

The composition is rendered using roketsu-zome, a traditional Japanese wax-resist dyeing technique. Wax is applied before dyeing to prevent colour from penetrating selected areas, producing gently irregular edges and subtle variations that distinguish the work from mechanically printed textiles.

Made from 100% linen, the fabric has a naturally textured weave that allows light to pass softly through it. The bold colour and elongated design make this noren particularly effective as a doorway curtain, room divider or piece of textile art.

Although traditionally associated with winter and the Japanese New Year, its timeless symbolism makes it suitable for display throughout the year.
