Description:
“The crane lives for a thousand years; the turtle for ten thousand.”
The crane and turtle have been cherished in Japan for centuries as symbols of longevity, happiness and prosperity. The crane’s graceful form represents a long and elevated life, while the turtle’s exceptional lifespan and steady progress symbolize endurance, stability and wisdom.
This magnificent Japanese noren depicts a crane in flight and a turtle moving above stylized waves. They are surrounded by pine branches, flowing clouds and richly patterned decorative forms, bringing together an abundance of traditional Japanese imagery associated with good fortune.
The design is created using katazome, a traditional Japanese stencil-dyeing technique. Its crisp outlines and carefully layered colours allow the intricate details to stand out vividly against the rich red linen ground.
Red has long been associated in Japan with celebration, vitality and protection. Combined with the crane-and-turtle motif, it gives this noren a particularly festive and auspicious character.
Made from 100% linen, the fabric has a naturally textured weave that adds depth and warmth to the artwork. The rich vermilion red, olive green, mustard yellow and charcoal colouring makes it a dramatic focal point for traditional or contemporary interiors.
This piece is produced by Manyōsha, the original textile and interior brand of Uno Co., Ltd. Manyōsha works with Kyoto artisans, combining traditional Japanese textile techniques with designs created for modern living spaces.
Display it in a doorway, against a wall or as a large decorative textile panel. The hanging rod shown in the photograph is not included.
