Product Description

A dramatic Kyoto-made linen tapestry inspired by the evolving beauty of traditional Negoro lacquerware. Layers of vermilion and charcoal black create a richly weathered abstract surface with remarkable depth.

This striking Japanese wall tapestry is named Negoro (根来), taking its inspiration from the distinctive character of traditional Negoro-nuri lacquerware.

Negoro lacquerware is traditionally created by applying layers of vermilion lacquer over a darker black foundation. With years of handling, areas of red gradually wear away to reveal the black beneath, creating a unique patina valued for its depth and changing expression.

Manyōsha translates this aesthetic into linen through urushi-zome, or lacquer dyeing. Uneven fields of vermilion, muted black and charcoal overlap across the naturally textured fabric, recalling the time-worn surface of an antique lacquered object.

The design expresses the Japanese concept of yō no bi—beauty found in useful objects that acquire greater character with time. Its abstract composition has a distinctly contemporary presence while remaining deeply connected to Japanese decorative tradition.

With its elegant, narrow proportions, the tapestry is especially suited to a hallway, alcove or limited wall space. It complements Japanese, contemporary, industrial and minimalist interiors.

Made in Kyoto by Manyōsha, this distinctive textile brings colour, texture and quiet drama to the interior.
