Description:
Matsu — Pine
This graceful Japanese noren captures the nostalgic beauty of Taishō Roman, an aesthetic associated with Japan’s Taishō period of 1912–1926. During this era, traditional Japanese design blended with new Western influences, creating a distinctive style that was romantic, refined and quietly modern.
A stately pine spreads across the natural linen beneath a softly outlined circular sun. Muted shades of green and charcoal are balanced by a warm rust-coloured border, giving the composition an understated vintage character.
The pine, or matsu, is an enduring Japanese symbol of longevity, resilience and good fortune. Its sculptural branches bring both strength and tranquillity to the design.
The noren is individually hand-dyed using roketsu-zome, a traditional Japanese wax-resist dyeing technique. The characteristic softness around the colours and natural pooling of the dye create subtle variations that cannot be achieved through mechanical printing. These variations are part of the textile’s handmade beauty.
Made from lightly textured linen, the fabric gently filters the light while allowing the design to remain visible from both sides. It can be displayed as a doorway curtain, room divider or decorative textile artwork in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
