Shōchikubai—pine, bamboo and plum—is one of the most enduring auspicious motifs in Japanese art.

These three plants remain strong or flourish during the coldest season and are therefore known collectively as the Three Friends of Winter:

• Pine remains green throughout the year and represents longevity and steadfastness.
• Bamboo bends without breaking, symbolizing resilience, flexibility and integrity.
• Plum blossoms while winter still lingers, representing hope, renewal and the arrival of spring.

Together, they express perseverance through adversity and the promise of new beginnings. Shōchikubai designs are traditionally associated with celebrations, good fortune and wishes for a long and prosperous life.

This striking noren presents the three motifs as a single large, crest-like medallion. The natural linen design contrasts beautifully against the translucent charcoal-grey ground, creating an appearance that is both boldly graphic and quietly refined.

The design belongs to Manyōsha’s Neo-Classical Noren collection, which reinterprets traditional Japanese imagery for contemporary interiors. Its restrained monochrome palette makes it particularly versatile, complementing modern minimalist rooms as readily as traditional Japanese spaces.

Made from 100% linen, the fabric has a naturally textured weave and allows a subtle amount of light to pass through it. The noren can be displayed in a doorway, against a wall or as a large decorative textile panel.
