Full product description:
Chinowa Kuguri is an ancient Shinto purification ritual associated with prayers for good health and protection from misfortune. Visitors to a shrine pass through a large circular ring made from chigaya reeds, symbolically leaving impurities and the troubles of the preceding months behind.
This striking Japanese noren depicts Shinto priests passing through a sacred reed ring beneath the vermilion entrance to a shrine. Its softly weathered colours and simplified lines give the design the appearance of an old Japanese painting.
The image was created using rōketsuzome, a traditional Japanese wax-resist dyeing technique related to batik. Wax is applied directly to the cloth with a brush before dyeing. The wax produces clearly defined outlines, while the natural movement and gentle bleeding of the dyes create subtle variations and remarkable depth.
Made from 100% linen, the fabric has a natural weave that complements the handcrafted character of the design. The warm vermilion, leafy green and muted golden tones make this an especially beautiful piece for spring and early summer, although it can be displayed throughout the year.
This noren is produced by Manyōsha, the original textile and interior brand of Uno Co., Ltd. The company works with Kyoto artisans, combining traditional Japanese dyeing techniques with designs intended for contemporary interiors.
Display it in a doorway, against a wall or as a decorative textile panel. The hanging rod shown in the photograph is not included.
