The moon has inspired Japanese artists and poets for centuries. This evocative noren depicts the Ariake Moon (ariake no tsuki), the pale moon that remains in the sky as night gives way to morning.
The design recalls a celebrated classical waka poem in which someone waits throughout a long autumn night for a loved one who has promised to come. By the time the waiting is over, the Ariake Moon is shining in the dawn sky:
You said, “I will come at once,” and so I waited through the long autumn night, until the moon of daybreak appeared.
Rather than illustrating a single story literally, the design captures the feelings that generations of people have projected onto the moon—longing, anticipation, remembrance and the quiet passage of time.
The image is rendered in muted, weathered tones on a naturally textured blend of jute and linen. Its subdued colouring and understated composition give it the appearance of an aged Japanese artwork, making it equally suited to traditional Japanese rooms and restrained contemporary interiors.
This noren is produced by Manyōsha, the original textile and interior brand of Uno Co., Ltd. The company works with Kyoto artisans and combines traditional Japanese textile techniques with designs created for modern interiors.
A noren can be displayed in a doorway, against a wall or as a decorative textile panel. The hanging rod shown in the photograph is not included.
