Product Description
A graceful Kyoto-made tapestry depicting a vivid blue-and-white flycatcher resting among crimson and golden autumn maple leaves. Hand-painted on naturally textured jute and linen, the contrasting colours create a serene yet striking seasonal composition.
This elegant Japanese wall tapestry is named Momiji, referring to the brilliant colours of autumn maple leaves.
A blue-and-white flycatcher rests quietly upon a slender branch, surrounded by leaves changing from gold and orange to deep crimson. Soft bamboo shadows emerge above the bird, while the generous open space and long, trailing branches lend the composition a peaceful sense of depth.
Known in Japanese as the ōruri, the blue-and-white flycatcher has long been admired for the magnificent blue colouring of the male bird. Its name contains the word ruri, meaning lapis lazuli—one of the Seven Treasures of Buddhism and a precious colour traditionally associated with the Pure Land.
The vivid blue of the bird contrasts beautifully with the warm red and orange maple leaves. Together, these colours create a refined expression of the Japanese autumn and its fleeting seasonal beauty.
Each tapestry is individually hand-painted by skilled Kyoto artisans. Subtle variations in the brushwork and colour give the textile an individual character that cannot be reproduced by mechanical printing.
The fabric combines jute and linen, producing a richly textured natural surface with gentle tonal variations. Its slender proportions and scroll-style presentation make it ideal for an alcove, entranceway, hallway or narrow wall in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
