Item Description:
A Kyoto-made linen noren featuring an auspicious catfish and frog design in natural beige against an earthy olive-green ground. Traditionally associated with protection, safe return, prosperity and good health.
This distinctive Japanese noren features a playful composition of a large catfish swimming above a frog resting on a water lily.
Both creatures have long been regarded as auspicious messengers in Japanese folklore. The frog is especially fortunate because the Japanese word kaeru can mean both “frog” and “to return.” It is associated with expressions such as returning home safely, the return of good fortune and the return of money. Its forward leap also symbolises progress, professional success and advancement.
The catfish has traditionally been associated with earthquakes. According to Japanese legend, its movements beneath the earth could foretell seismic activity, making it a symbolic guardian against unexpected disaster. Together, the frog and catfish form a light-hearted yet meaningful design representing protection, good health and prosperity.
The pattern is created using bassen, a discharge-dyeing technique in which colour is selectively removed from dyed fabric. This produces the softly defined natural-beige imagery against the subdued olive-green ground while allowing the design to remain part of the fabric rather than sitting on its surface.
Made in Kyoto from 100% linen, the noren has a beautifully visible weave and gentle translucence that filters natural light. It can be displayed in a doorway, used as a room divider or hung as decorative textile art.
The hanging rod shown in the photograph is not included.
