Official, Full-Size Kyoto Gion Matsuri Festival Chochin Lanterns
Hand Made & Painted on both sides In Kyoto Japan – Finest Quality!
These are real ‘Gion Matsuri’ Chochin paper lantern as used in the famous Gion Festival. They can be seen all up and down the streets of Kyoto at this time as well as on the Hoko floats. They are hand made in Gifu of all natural materials and hand painted on Yanaginobanba street by craftsmen skilled in the ancient art of Japanese lantern making. Not a tourist item – this is the REAL thing! Absolutely authentic! An iconic symbol of Gion.
They measure 33cm X 84cm (13″ X 25″) and are made in the traditional way with a lacqured bamboo top and bottom. They include a wire at the top for hanging. They are easy to rig it with a small lightbulb for a dramatic touch at night.
Note: if used outdoors, they should be under a roof – in Gion, the lanterns often have their own conical, black sheet-metal ‘roof’ to keep them dry. They are extreamly durable and will last for many years if properly cared for.
The design is a special one used for the famous Gion Festival in mid July. They can be seen all over Kyoto at that time including along the route of the festival and adorning the huge ‘hoko’ floats.
